The most obvious difference between real essays while the things one has to write in school is the fact that real essays are not exclusively about English literature. Certainly schools should teach students simple tips to write. But due to a number of historical accidents the teaching of writing has gotten mixed with the study of literature. And thus all over the country students are writing not about how exactly a baseball team with a small budget might compete with the Yankees, or even the role of color in style, or what constitutes a good dessert, but about symbolism in Dickens.
Aided by the result that writing was created to seem boring and pointless. Who cares about symbolism in Dickens? Dickens himself would be more interested in an essay about baseball or color.
How did things understand this way? To answer that people need to return back almost a thousand years. Around 1100, Europe at last begun to catch its breath after centuries of chaos, as soon as the luxury was had by them of curiosity they rediscovered what we call “the classics.” The effect was rather as though we had been visited by beings from another system that is solar. These earlier civilizations were much more sophisticated that for the next several centuries the main work of European scholars, in nearly every field, would be to assimilate what they knew.
The study of ancient texts acquired great prestige during this period. It seemed the essence of what scholars did. As European scholarship gained momentum it became less and less important; by 1350 somebody who wanted to read about science could find better teachers than Aristotle in his own era. 1 But schools change slower than scholarship.Details
